Olde School: Book One Kingdom City Chronicles By: Selah Janel – Book Review

Olde School: Book One Kingdom City Chronicles
By: Selah Janel – Book Review

About the Author: Selah Janel has been blessed with a giant imagination and a love of story since she was little and convinced that fairies lived in the nearby state park or vampires hid in the abandoned barns outside of town. Learning to read and being encouraged by those around her only made things worse. Her work ranges from e-books to traditional print, and she prefers to write every genre at once rather than choose just one. The stories “Holly and Ivy”, “The Other Man”, and “Mooner” are available online through Mocha Memoirs Press. Her work has also been included in The MacGuffin, The Realm Beyond, Stories for Children Magazine, The Big Bad: an Anthology of Evil, Thunder on the Battlefield: Sorcery, The Grotesquerie, and the short story collection Lost in the Shadows, co-written with S.H. Roddey. She likes her music to rock, her vampires lethal, her fairies to play mind games, and her princesses to have adventures and hold their own.

Book Synopsis Olde School: Kingdom City has moved into the modern era. Run by a lord mayor and city council (though still under the influence of the High King of The Land), it proudly embraces a blend of progress and tradition. Trolls, ogres, and other Folk walk the streets with humans, but are more likely to be entrepreneurs than cause trouble. Princesses still want to be rescued, but they now frequent online dating services to encourage lords, royals, and politicians to win their favor. The old stories are around, but everyone knows they’re just fodder for the next movie franchise. Everyone knows there’s no such thing as magic. It's all old superstition and harmless tradition.

Bookish, timid, and more likely to carry a laptop than a weapon, Paddlelump Stonemonger is quickly coming to wish he'd never put a toll bridge over Crescent Ravine. While his success has brought him lots of gold, it's also brought him unwanted attention from the Lord Mayor. Adding to his frustration, Padd’s oldest friends give him a hard time when his new maid seems inept at best and conniving at worst. When a shepherd warns Paddlelump of strange noises coming from Thadd Forest, he doesn't think much of it. Unfortunately for him, the history of his land goes back further than anyone can imagine. Before long he'll realize that he should have paid attention to the old tales and carried a club.

Darkness threatens to overwhelm not only Paddlelump, but the entire realm. With a little luck, a strange bird, a feisty waitress, and some sturdy friends, maybe, just maybe, Padd will survive to eat another meal at Trip Trap's diner. It's enough to make the troll want to crawl under his bridge, if he can manage to keep it out of the clutches of greedy politicians

Olde School if Book One of The Kingdom City Chronicles.

My Thoughts:

It is hard to put into words what I think of this book. I am not sure love is enough.  This book was refreshing, fun, engrossing, thought provoking and awesome. Selah Janel is Brilliant.  This is a cross genre book which I was intrigued by from the start. Fantasy, paranormal, urban fantasy, horror, comedy and it is a tried and true Fairy Tale. I love Fairy Tales but (excuse the pun) old school ones and this one fits the profile. This book is smart and witty. Janel has created a word full of interesting and engaging characters and a world so vivid at times I could picture myself in Kingdom City.  The first night I started reading this I read until I could not keep my eyes open and that night I dreamed of Kingdom City, that is how vivid it is and how it stays with you. I could not wait to get back to the story.  I adored Padd and would love to sit down with him at Trip Trap's diner for a chat and a meal. I am looking forward to more books in the series. Janel has quickly climbed the ranks of must read for me.

Olde School also has some amazing art work. Another high quality book from Seventh Star Press.

My Rating:
An Easy 5 out of 5.

Guest Post - H David Blalock for the release of Southern Haunts: Devils in the Darkness

I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of this blog tour and even more excited that I have H. David Blalock here with a guest post today. If you have not read anything by Blalock drop what you are doing this instance and go and get one of his books or one of the anthologies with a story of his in it. I know I get a little fangirlish but H. David Blalock is by far one of the best writers I have ever read. Well Thank you Mr. Blalock for being a guest. This blog tour is promoting Southern Haunts: Devils in the Darkness and lets read what Mr. Blalock has to say about the horror tale of his you can find in this anthology.

Why Did Jack Do It?

By H. David Blalock

Jack Tennant found his destiny when he sailed into the dark swamps of Louisiana, but that destiny was nothing like what he expected.

Jack in the Box, my story in Southern Haunts 2, was inspired by several things. I had a story in the first Southern Haunts and was delighted to receive an invitation to submit for this one.

The first source of inspiration, of course, was the theme that the story had to be centered in the South. Hard to get around that one, since it was the primary prerequisite for inclusion in the anthology. Most of my horror stories don't specify their locations. Usually, pinning down the location lessens the impact of the story itself. It tends to distance the reader from the events, giving them that extra bit of feeling of safety. However, I took that as a challenge, to overcome that feeling of invulnerability.

Second was my fascination with the mythology around the Louisiana swamps. I mention several of
them in the story but I wanted to use them not as the central plot line but as the impetus for my main character to act. Each character in a story needs a reason to do what they do, especially if what they do puts them in danger or places them in extraordinary circumstances. In Jack in the Box, Jack Tennant's fascination with the tales of the swamp is simply a mirror of my own.

However, his determination to find out the truth behind the myths goes far beyond my own curiosity and enters into the realm of obsession.

Third, and most significant, I love stories that have that shivery feeling you get when the lights are
out and something is roaming just outside your ability to see it. It's a haunting feeling – the serpent in the high grass, the black widow in the bedding. It's that certainty that something isn't quite what it should be and when you finally see it you know you will be terrified but you're not quite there yet. Anticipation. Dread. What we call "the willies". With Jack in the Box, I wanted to bring that feeling to the reader. By taking them along with Jack just so far then leaving them behind, I tease their interest without blatantly showing them the truth. Doing so makes the reveal at the end just that much more powerful.

For me, the pinnacle of horror is not the splash of gore or the screams of the murdered. Such things are horrible but not horrifying. True horror, to me, is facing the unknown and being completely clueless how to handle it. Should you stay still and hope whatever is there passes you by? Do you run and chance you can escape? Scream for help that may not come in time? Fight back knowing you may not survive the battle? It is this kind of feeling I hope to convey in this story and all my horror tales.

About the Editors: Alexander S. Brown: Alexander S. Brown is a Mississippi author who was published in 2008 with his first book, Traumatized. Reviews for this short story collection were so favorable that it will be released as a special edition. Brown is currently one of the co-editors/coordinators with the Southern Haunts Anthologies published by Seventh Star Press. His horror novel, Syrenthia Falls is represented by Dark Oak Press. He is also the author of multiple young adult steampunk stories found in the following anthologies Dreams of Steam Vol 2 & 4, Clockwork Spells and Magical Bells, and Capes and Clockworks. Look out for his controversial piece, “The Last Lamb” found in the anthology, Luna’s Children.

About the Editors: Louise Myers: Louise Myers was born in New Orleans. During her teenage years, she was uprooted from everything she knew and was replanted in Mississippi. Though the transition was difficult, she is grateful for this change. She says this because she knows that both places are a world all to their own. She is the wife of a wonderful husband and mother of three beautiful children, as well as the proud parent of a spoiled mutt. She was assistant editor for Southern Haunts: Spirits That Walk Among Us and was proud to be part of The Southern Haunts Series once again. She is a beta reader, book doctor, editor, and author. Though this is her first story in print, she has been weaving tales for many years. With the gentle, yet firm, shove from a very special person, she has decided to dive into the world of print. She has many thoughts on several topics she’d like to write, mostly involving ghost stories.

Book Synopsis Southern Haunts Devils in the Darkness: From the fiery abyss of the underworld comes 20 hellish tales from the south and southwest. Within these charred pages are stories that will introduce you to the many demons that stay hidden but are always nearby…

20 authors provide stories of possessed people, objects, houses, highways, and the devil’s favorite playground - the forest.

Dare to meet Deidless, a demon who is a buyer of souls. Discover what kind of demons men can summon. Read of battles between good and evil. Learn of ancient artifacts and stones that crave sacrifice. Finally, become acquainted with legions of evil.

Again, we invite you, sit back, dim the lights, and prepare yourself to meet the devils in the darkness.

Southern Haunts: Devils in the Darkness is the next installment in the exciting anthology series that began with Southern Haunts: Spirits That Walk Among Us.

A. Christopher Drown - A Mage of None Magic Book One The Heart of the Sisters Guest Post

Today we are lucky to be apart of the A. Christopher Drown blog tour Welcome welcome, we are lucky to have A. Christopher here with us for a guest post and here he is.

You've heard it before. A hundred times. A thousand times.

It’s the track that almost didn't make the album that ends up with the Grammy. It’s the actress who’d been passed over but then given one last look who takes home the Oscar. It’s the animal adopted only hours from being put down that wakes the family in the middle of the night and saves everyone from the fire. It’s the idea just about everyone dismissed as crazy that ends up taking the world by storm.

For writers, amateur and established alike, the lesson there is that it takes just one person to say yes. Just one person who’s willing to accept a little risk on your behalf is often all that lies between you and your deserved triumph. Which is why the task that’s even more arduous than all the long days and late nights of writing, editing, and changing is simply not to give up until you find that one person who recognizes your work for the worthy, wonderful thing it is.

Someone told me early on that if you’re not receiving a steady supply of rejection letters, then you’re not doing it right. You’re not really trying to break through as a writer. Because everyone gets rejected, repeatedly and mercilessly. But that’s the game. That’s the lottery you can’t win if you don’t play. And as you persist in sending submission after submission, take comfort in the impressive company of rebuffed authors you’re keeping:

Stephen King’s "Carrie" received dozens of rejections before finally selling—but only because his wife found the manuscript in the trash and insisted he try one more time. The Lord of the Flies by William Golding was turned down twenty times. One publisher who read Anne Frank’s diary found it scarcely worth reading because it didn’t “have a special perception or feeling which would lift that book above the ‘curiosity’ level.” John Grisham’s A Time to Kill had to make its way through a dozen publishers and sixteen agents before seeing the light of day. Dune received twenty-three rejections. Publishers dismissed Watership Down repeatedly because no one thought children would understand its prose. A Wrinkle in Time has twenty-six rejection letters under its belt. Gone with the Wind has that beat with thirty-eight. A publisher thought the collective verdict of H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds would be, “Oh, don’t read that horrid book.” Even Chicken Soup of the Soul, which went on to sell a metric-gazillion of copies, let alone its infinite list of follow-ups, was turned down more than one hundred times. And the first book of the Harry Potter series was rejected by nearly every publisher in the U.K. before going on to make J.K. Rowling literally richer than the Queen of England.

If you believe in your work, if you can look in the mirror and say wholeheartedly what you’re submitting is the cleanest, tightest, absolute best you can possibly make it, then keep going. Don’t stop. Send it out again. And again. And again. Don’t dare let those interested in merely capitalizing on what’s safe—on what others have heard before a hundred times; a thousand times—decide whether your writing is worth being read by the world. Search for that one person who’ll believe right along with you. That person’s out there. Right now.

So find them. Join that vast fraternity of writers who were told over and over they weren't good enough, that they had nothing to offer readers, so that you, like them, can look back afterward through crammed shoeboxes of rejection letters and have that sweet last laugh you worked so hard to earn.

About the Author: A. Christopher Drown is a native of Brunswick, Maine, who currently resides in Memphis. His work has appeared in several magazines and anthologies. The first edition of A Mage of None Magic won the 2010 Darrell Award for Best Novel. His story, Path of an Arrow, received the 2012 Darrell Award for Best Novella. He recently completed his second novel and is at work on The Book of Sediahm, the next book in the Heart of the Sisters series. An award-winning graphic designer, when not slogging away at his trusty Macbook, Pedro, he can be found hiding around a nearby corner waiting to leap out at either of his unsuspecting children.

Book Synopsis A Mage of None Magic: Myth tells that magic came to be when the fabled gem known as the Heart of the Sisters was shattered by evil gods. The same tale speaks of the Heart being healed one day, unleashing a power that will bring the end of humankind.

While traveling to begin his magical studies, young apprentice Niel finds himself suddenly at the center of the Heart's terrifying legend. Caught in a whirlwind of events that fractures the foundation of everything he's believed, Niel learns his role in the world may be far more important than he ever could have imagined--or ever would have wished.

A Mage of None Magic begins an extraordinary adventure into a perilous land where autocratic magicians manipulate an idle aristocracy, where common academia struggles for acceptance, and where after ages of disregard myth and legend refuse to be ignored any longer.

As usual SSP has amazing art.

Creating the Unseelie Court
By Deedee Davies

As a kid, I was always fascinated by mythology, folklore and faerie stories, a fascination that has stayed with me through the years. When the opportunity came up to contribute something for the Seelie and / or Unseelie Court for Seventh Star Press, I just had to write something for it!

There were certain themes I really wanted to include that would hopefully allow the reader to identify the traditional elements from folklore, and give the story a bit of legitimacy.

Faeries are known for granting wishes, making bargains, and usually making sure that the human gets short shrift in any deal they make.  I wanted the deal Rhian makes with Crackle to be just that. She gets exactly what was promised – with added extras!  While wracking my brains for suitably two-edged gifts, I was inspired by the spider-silk clothing that’s been made in the last few years http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/g/golden-spider-silk/ so I imagined the dress would look pretty similar to this cloth – but with a few stowaways!

I’m a very visual person – I split my spare time between artwork and writing – and I tried to make the Unseelie Court itself as visually striking as possible. I had quite a clear vision of it in my head, which was a twisted, hellish setting, where the courtiers are more and more terrifying the further in you go. I also wanted to make the Unseelie king part-terrifying and part-attractive, with a short fuse and the same capricious nature as the rest of his kind. I have a hankering to make some artwork based on that character before too long!

Deedee is a writer interested mainly in the fantasy, horror and science-fiction genres.  Inspired by turn of the century fantasy and science-fiction, she wrote a great deal as a youngster, returning to it in 2012, when she finished her first draft novel.  Since then, she has had 5 stories published, 3 of them in Seventh Star Press anthologies. Deedee is also a cover artist, with around 30 published book covers under her belt.  She lives in Plymouth, UK with her partner, 9 spiders and 4 snakes.

Book Synopsis Tales of the Seelie Court: The Fey have been with us since the beginning, sometimes to our great joy but often to our detriment. Usually divided (at least by us silly humans) into two courts, the first volume of A Chimerical World focuses on the Seelie Court: the court we humans seem to view as the "good" faeries. But when the perfect pair's domestic bliss is threatened by a super-powered secret from the past, Awesome Jones has to make a choice. My Thoughts:

It is fitting that Awesome is in the title. This book was that awesome. It was fast paced, fun, exciting. Hard to put this one down. Sullivan is a master story teller and  has developed strong, connectable characters. Superheros, Average Joes, Love, Romance it has it all. It was fun to be in an superhero world even as a ordinary person. Action packed from start to finish.  I highly recommend this to everyone.

 My Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5.
