Review of The Blood Moon of Winter by Courtney Conant

The Blood Moon of Winter is the debut of Courtney Conant and it is a fantastic story. The character of Lily was very quirky which made her easy to like and relate to. The way Courtney Conant wrote Lily's life when she was awake and when she was in Makayra was done perfectly by the use of words that made it possible for me to picture everything that was happening. Another thing that I liked about The Blood Moon of Winter was how Courtney Conant built up the relationship between Lily and Jason rather than have them fall in love instantly. My favorite part of the story was Sarwanell because I thought the idea of a talking panther was genius.

Elena is a twenty two year old widow with a four year old daughter, that are trying to make it in the world. Her best friend tells her of a job in Italy that pays well, when Elena decides to take it and leave for Italy, she is hit with a hard terror, after being blindfolded and drugged, she realises she is now a sex slave. Being raped and beaten by her owners and by the men who pay for her, she feels completely dead inside. When a failed escape gets her bought by another man, she tries to gain his trust, and after her initiation into the "Millionaires" club, she has some hope that one of the men will help her find her daughter and get her away from this life.

This is a story that really grabs you and hits you with reality. Sex Slavery and Trafficking is such a horrible crime, yet it is going on everyday and I hope this story will bring more attention to it and make others aware of this awful reality.

Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb by M.J.A. Ware

Synopsis:
When life gives you lemons, kill zombies — turns out lemon juice neutralizes the undead. After a failed attempt at running away, best friends Nathan and Misty return home expecting to face angry parents. Instead, they discover the military has destroyed the bridges out of their rural town and everyone's fled—except a small horde of the living dead. The stress of flesh-eating zombies may be more than their already strained relationship can handle. Even with the help of the town geek and lemonade-powered Super-Soakers, there's not enough time to squeeze their way out of this sticky mess. Unless the trio eradicates the zombie infestation, while avoiding the deadly zombie snot, the military will blow the town, and them, to pulp. Their only shot is something with a lot more punch. Something like the Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb. But even if their friendship survives, there's another problem: Someone has to lure the undead into the trap.
(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My thoughts:
This is not your typical shoot in the head and kill zombie story. However, Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb, is a great zombie apocolypse novel. I like how the author decided to go outside the boundaries of normal and make the zombies killable by lemonade. All the characters were very enjoyable, and in that awkward pre-adolscent stage. You could really identify with the sadness, frustration, and despair the characters felt. Although, by no means was this an entirely sad book. It had funny and witty moments in it also. Nate needing underwear and always destroying it made me chuckle. The short stories at the end of the book were good also. Super Zombie Mega Juice bomb was a very enjoyable book. I would highly reccomend it for young readers over ten and zombie fans alike.

I give Super Zombie Mega Juice Bomb: 4/5.

Stay Tuned by Lauren Clark (Reviewed by Melissa)

What do you do if you think your husband is cheating, your mother has dementia and very rarely remembers who you are and the two anchors of the news show you produce just got into a fist fight on live television? Do you run and hide? No, you Stay Tuned to see what your life turns into! Melissa Moore, the main character of the story, has her work cut out for her. She's in a rut before it's mid-life crisis time. Her daughter has left for college, she yearns for another child, and her husband barely knows she's alive, unless of course she discusses his job, which consumes him 24/7. To top everything off the news cast she produces for has it's fair share of drama with the two anchors, Alyssa and Tim, who lie, cheat, and abuse each other in and out of public.

The drama between Alyssa and Tim finally comes to a head. Sadly, it happens during a live telecast, at which time Alyssa punches Tim in the face. Not all attention is good ratings for the show. After both anchors are fired, with no anchor to replace Alyssa, Drew turns to Melissa to replace the anchor. Thanks to her best friend, Candace, and a fun shopping spree Melissa is soon ready for her place in front of the camera. Well, except for the electricity she feels between herself and her hunky co-anchor, Rick Roberts. Other than for a few stumbles Melissa does well in her new position and the audience loves her and Rick together.

A well written, quick read book, you'll be done with the book before you know what happened. The reader will love the hustle of the television station, the dilemma's and conflict's that Melissa works through, and the love-able character's that Lauren Clark has created. My favorite was Candace, the Dr. Phil loving, snazzy hairdressing friend. I need one of those! She was so upbeat and positive. The perfect compliment to Melissa's worrying, hold-back personality. The problems that the main character faces is, from my point of view, very believable. I have had some of the same doubts, and problems, that she has. I feel most women will be able to connect with Melissa.

Did Chris cheat on Melissa? Will Melissa give in to her hunky co-anchor? Will Melissa's mother give her the love and attention she craves or forget her again? Well, to find out I guess you'll just have to Stay Tuned! As part of the whirlwind tour for Novel Publicity, this book is currently only $.99. I give this book a five star rating! A steal for the quality of the book. You must pick it up!! Best Friends Forever: Me and My Cat: What I've Learned about Life, Love, and Faith from My Cat by Patricia Mitchell

Not only do they develop a special bond, but people can gain insights on life, faith, and love from their cats and dogs. These heartwarming collections include 40 meditations each and draw from real-life experiences with the authors' own pets as well as those of their family and friends. From Katrina survivor Bess to the phone-answering dog Jordy, from the kitten-tending grandpa cat to the lifelong camp resident Sylvester, each reading is sure to delight, encourage, and inspire.
(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Thoughts:
I thought this was a great book. I am a fellow cat lover, so I could really appreciate and identify with quite a few of the short stories in this book. Best Friends Forever: Me and My Cat was a comfort to me. I read it when my mom's cat died, and it gave me strength and hope to mourn and say goodbye to a cat that was like a member of the family. I think Gold Cat was my favorite cat in this book. I liked his take no prisoners attitude, and how he made sure everyone knew he was the leader of the cats in the neighborhood. This is a fun read full of short stories. I would reccomend this book to any cat lover, or anyone just looking for inspiration.

I give Best Friends Forever: Me and My Cat 4/5.

Daimon by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis:
For three years, Alexandria has lived among mortals—pretending to be like them and trying to forget the duty she'd been trained to fulfill as a child of a mortal and a demigod. At seventeen, she's pretty much accepted that she's a freak by mortal standards... and that she'll never be prepared for that duty.

According to her mother, that’s a good thing.

But as every descendant of the gods knows, Fate has a way of rearing her ugly head. A horrifying attack forces Alex to flee Miami and try to find her way back to the very place her mother had warned her she should never return—the Covenant. Every step that brings her closer to safety is one more step toward death… because she's being hunted by the very creatures she'd once trained to kill.

The daimons have found her.

My Thoughts:
This book is the prequel to the first book in the Covenant series, Half-Blood. Damion was a great short read, at only 62 pages plus a free sample of Half-Blood. I loved the main character, Alexandria, and her witty personality. She is a very strong character. A tragedy happens that would make any normal person want to give up, but she gathers her courage up, and continues on her journey. Alexandria is very tough and can hold her own in a fight, wheter she's fighting against humans or daimons. This ebook kind of reminded me of Vampire Academy. Daimon made me want to pick up Half-Blood and start reading just to find out what happens next. I would definitely recommend Daimon as a short fun read.

I give Daimon: 4/5.

Venn and Daisy by Roxanne Hunter (Reviewed by Melissa)

In book three of the series, Venn and Daisy, Roxanne Hunter introduces a few more characters to the cast. Chelsea in the grand-daughter of Jessie, the daughter to Maria and "Kid" and the sister of Gabe, the little boy who Venn escaped to save in book two. Also introduced is Terrence, the mentor and neighbor to Gabe. Things take another wrong turn for Jessie and her family when Chelsea's ex-boyfriend is murdered. Chelsea wakes up at the scene to find blood everywhere and she can not remember a thing.

At this point the reader has realized that Chelsea has a split personality disorder, just like her grandmother, except her other personality, Daisy, is not a murder. It becomes more clear further into the book why Daisy is there. A very childlike personality, bordering on annoying according to Venn, Daisy is Chelsea's alternate persona which she assumes to protect her from Michael. Michael is a twisted murder who enjoys torturing women.

After the ex-boyfriend is found dead, a set-up by Michael, Chelsea is sent for observation at the same hospital that Jessie/Venn reside in. Venn is very unhappy with Daisy for allowing Chelsea to end up in the hospital, something he asked her NOT to do. Through a series of therapy sessions with a doctor not related to the family, a few murders at the hospital and some arguments with Chelsea's family, the reader is able to uncover the reasons for Chelsea's personality disorder.

Will Chelsea return to her former self, removing Daisy from the equation? Will they be able to escape the clutches of Michael? Is Daisy really as innocent, albeit annoying, as she seems? I guess you'll have to pick up your own copy to find out! I have it on good authority that there will be even more books in this series, so stay tuned!

Author Interview: Charmaine Gordon

At one point in her life Charmaine Gordon has been a daytime actress, a spokesperson, has also starred in commercials and on stage. Now, after leaving it all behind she has taken up writing. She seems to have taken to it with the same zest she did her acting career! Already numerous books into it, with more to come, she's not letting life slow her down.
Well, she did slow down for a few minutes, long enough to kindly answer the questions posed to her. Read on to find her responses. At the end are her buy links, so be sure to check it out!

*What was your life like before becoming an author?
Life before writing was filled with acting. As an actor, I auditioned a lot, read scripts, sometimes got cast in movies, plays, lots of daytime drama. A sweet time, very competitive as I read against seasoned performers but I got lucky and was  cast many times. My first break was being Geraldine Ferraro’s stand-in in a Pepsi commercial. That opened a lot of doors especially into the unions.

*What sparked the idea for your series?

The new series came toward the end of “NOW WHAT?” my third book with Vanilla Heart Publishing. The characters were so lush, I hated to say goodbye. Then I wrote  “RECONSTRUCTING CHARLIE” and toward the end, some key characters reappeared. A series began. The second, “HAVEN” features Jimmy Costigan and his sister’s best friend, Shelley Jackson. It’s a novella. I’m writing the final story in the series now.

*How personal is your writing?
I didn’t realize how personal writing can be . As the writer writes, bits and pieces of yourself fall onto the page and there you are.

*Which comes first? The character's story or the idea for the novel?
I sleep write. A story comes to me in the night. In the morning I begin to write with an idea of a beginning, middle and ending in mind.

*What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
If you want to write, just do it. Everyone has a story. Begin by lifting the curtain you hide behind and write. You might begin with “Remember When” and write an anecdote about a memory. Whatever you do, keep writing. I did and now I have six books to my credit and another on the way.

*What is your favorite authors/books?
I love Robert B. Parker, his style and humor. If you haven’t read his Western stories, you’re missing something wonderful.

*If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Oh to have a meal with my Mother again who died suddenly at age fifty, beautiful and funny. One of a kind.

*What was your favorite part of the book(s)?
In “Now What?” my favorite part is where the heroine calls to the presence of her deceased husband and he joins her.

*What was the hardest part to write in the book(s)?
I cried a lot and laughed while writing “NOW WHAT?”-a story close to my heart. Hard to write and yet I couldn’t stop as the words flowed from my fingers.

*Where are you from?
Chicago is my hometown. Two of my books are set there. Can’t stay away.

*Tell us your latest news?
Recently I had hip replacement surgery. While lying behind the curtain in the room for two, I began to wonder if I was the one behind the curtain or was it my roommate. My writer’s mind, foggy with pain meds, began to work. I’m writing the story of this experience as the third in the series. A strange time and still is as I struggle to become whole again.

*When and why did you begin writing?
I began writing when my voice no longer functioned well enough for stage, movies, soaps. At the end of the run of The Fourth Commandment-off Broadway, I decided to write.

*When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When Vanilla Heart offered a contract, I definitely knew I’d become a writer.

*What inspired you to write your first book?
The first book, TO BE CONTINUED came to me in the night. I didn’t know anyone who’d been abandoned in marriage but there she was. The story is Survive and Thrive with Romance/Suspense and humor as Beth Malone struggles to become the winner she once was.

*Do you have a specific writing style?

My writing style is loose. I just do it.

Author Interview: Tracy James Jones

I was lucky enough that writer Tracy James Jones would take the time to answer some of the questions I asked. A writer through and through, but also a good person he has been told he was overprotected by the woes of the real world around him. Sadly, after the death of his beloved grandmother, who taught him to treat others as he wanted to be treated, that changed. Never to be a stranger to the hardships of life again and suffering through love, life and death, Tracy has done what he loves best....write.

He has majored in Journalism and minored in Mass Communications, been an actor at a local theater and as a stand-in for some award winning films, and even written a screen-play adaptation of his novel "Searching For Eden".  The subject of his first published book, Steve Mitchell  “No Tears For A Hero,” was produced as a documentary film by an acclaimed Dallas Director & Brokedown Films entitled, “Champ: The Steve Mitchell Story,” which won the official selection seal for the 2008 Dallas Video Film Festival. He is currently marketing his works as both book and film projects.

Read on to find out more from this jack of plenty trades, and at the end you'll find the links you need to meet him!

Venn: Reborn by Roxanne Hunter (Reviewed by Melissa)

Venn is at it again! I guess this poor guy won't ever get to rest. He always has to be there to protect Jessie, and now her family, from the harm that comes their way. In part two of the series Maria, Jessie's daughter, is married to "Son", the son of Jessie/Venn's therapist. Maria now has a 3 year old son named Gabe. When the family is threatened by The Bad Man, the one Jessie has been the most afraid of all these years, Jessie calls on Venn, once again, to save them. Of course sarcastic, angry Venn is not happy. You're supposed to rest and relax in your old age right?!

After seeing a doctor and nurse brutally murdered in the hospital by The Prince, a serial killer who boosts at having killed more than fifty people, Venn escapes the hospital, on Jessie's advice to follow the Prince. Jessie knows that The Bad Man and The Prince are in cahoots to murder her family. Since Venn hasn't been active in years, this is news to him. Venn is also not happy being out in the real world. With no money, no clothes, you can't blame him. Following Jessie's urging Venn arrives at Gabe's school, just in time to save him from being kidnapped and murdered. At this point Venn knows that Gabe isn't safe, and even though he hates children and all things annoying, he knows he needs to keep him hidden until the Bad Man is removed. What follows is a series of lessons to Gabe on protecting himself and Venn hunting The Prince.

While the reader is following Venn and Gabe on their adventure they are also getting the back story on The Bad Man and his role in Jessie's life. Also a twisted person, as there tends to be a lot of them in the series, The Bad Man might just be the worst. Once The Prince is removed from the equation, via Venn murdering him, it's time for the duo to return to the hospital, much to Venn's relief. There they find The Bad Man hurting Maria and Son. What results is a first for Jessie.

A great middle part to the series, this book gives the reader a lot of information on Jessie/Venn and why they are what they are. Jessie finds some more family and connections to lock her into this world just a little bit more and ease some of the suffering of the past. A definite must read as it is a great segue into book three. Once again, as with Venn, this book is on the twisted side. Forewarned is forearmed!

Bewitching (Kendra Chronicles) by Alex Flinn

Synopsis:
Kendra Hilferty, the witch who curses Kyle Kingsbury in Beastly, tells about her immortal existence-how she discovered she was a witch and the various ways she has used her powers to help people throughout the centuries. (Unfortunately her attempts have often backfired.) As it turns out, Kendra has actually had a hand in "Hansel and Gretel," "The Princess and the Pea," and "The Little Mermaid"-but these are not the fairy tales you think you know! Kendra's reminiscences are wrapped around a real-time version of "Cinderella," except the "ugly" stepsister is the good guy. With dark twists, hilarious turns, and unexpected endings, Bewitching is a contemporary read for fairy-tale lovers, fantasy fans, and anyone looking for more Alex Flinn.
(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Thoughts:
Words can not describe how much I fell in love with this book. The writing was phenomenal. I loved the mashups of fairy tales with real life events, such as Doria, the mermaid, being there when Titanic sunk, and helping the passengers. I loved the way the main character, Emma was written. The author made you feel like you were there, feeling her pain also. I didn't really care for Lisette, but at times I found myself feeling pity for her. She's a character that everyone loves to hate. Kendra was kind of original and weird, which I loved. She didn't really fit in anywhere, which I think everyone can identify with sometimes. Bewitching will make you laugh, cry, and make you happy. This book is a definite must read. Bewitching is possibly my favorite book of 2012 so far.

I give Bewitching: 5/5

I'm a Big Girl Now! by Maleah Malcolm

Synopsis:
Your little girl is growing up! I'm a Big Girl Now! embraces growing up with open arms.
A big girl is growing up and realizing all of the great things she can do now as a big girl that she couldn't do when she was a baby.
Sometimes thinking about your little girl growing up can make you feel blue, but this story helps both parents and children see that growing up is an amazing and exciting process.
(Synopsis taken from the back of the book.)

My thoughts:
I thought this is an adorable children's book. The illustrations are pretty goos for a debut book. I'm a Big Girl Now! addequitly expresses the struggles children have with wanting to grow up and not be treated like a toddler anymore. The main character, Layla, is definitely learning to do things on her own, such as writing her name, and make her own bed. I think this is a great book for both children and parents faced with having their kid age into childhood.

I give I'm a Big Girl Now: 3/5.

Once in a Full Moon by Ellen Schreiber

Synopsis:
Beware of a kiss under the full moon. It will change your life forever.

Celeste Parker is used to hearing scary stories about werewolves—Legend's Run is famous for them. She's used to everything in the small town until Brandon Maddox moves to Legend's Run and Celeste finds herself immediately drawn to the handsome new student. But when, after an unnerving visit with a psychic, she encounters a pack of wolves and gorgeous, enigmatic Brandon, she must discover whether his transformation is more than legend or just a trick of the shadows in the moonlight.

Her best friends may never forgive her if she gives up her perfect boyfriend, Nash, for Brandon, who's from the wrong side of town. But she can't deny her attraction or the strong pull he has on her. Brandon may be Celeste's hero, or he may be the most dangerous creature she could encounter in the woods of Legend's Run.

Psychic predictions, generations-old secrets, a town divided, and the possibility of falling in love with a hot and heroic werewolf are the perfect formula for what happens . . . once in a full moon.
(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Thoughts:
I picked up this book at the library because I love Ellen Schreiber's Vampire Kisses series and was curious what this book would be like. It definitely isn't as good as Vampire Kisses. I thought it was average. It wasn't horrible, but it didn't stand out in my mind as an amazing book. I thought the main character, Celeste was very stuck up. She fell in love with a Westsider, but hid that love from her friends because she was worried about what they would think since he wasn't rich or popular, and lived on the wrong side of town. Celeste's boyfriend Nash was very annoying and whiny also. While you're reading the book, you keep expecting something epic to happen, like a giant fight, and it never happens. The book ends on a cliffhanger, but it was something you kind of expected already. I'll probably read the next book in the series just to see if the series gets any better.

I give Once in a Full Moon: 3/5

About the book:

Delaney Lortal is a unique breed of girl. She is well spoken, extremely well read, and highly ambitious for love, but it is not those qualities that make her so unique. Venn by Roxanne Hunter (Reviewed by Melissa)

Ahhh there is something to be said about a book. The feel. The smell. The story. Awhile back I did an interview with author Roxanne Hunter. I became intrigued by her answers and let her know if she was ever interested in a review to let me know. She kindly responded that she would be, but she believes in old fashioned books and would have to send me paperbacks. I must say, I've missed books. Don't get me wrong, I love my Kindle, but there's just something about books. Now onto the review!

Venn is a very deep and moving book. This is not a light beach read. This story will change you in some ways. I am a light and rainbows type of girl. Peaches and cream. I was a little shaken by the book, but I do not feel that that is a bad thing. We all need our perfect world moved a little. The tale of Venn and Jessie is told very well. Jessie is adopted as a young girl, but her world drastically changes in the worst possible way when her mother leaves the family. Jessie is left alone, lost and in pain, with her father and two brothers who decide to take all their anger for the mother leaving out on her. The reader gets the sense, though, that the father and one brother were just evil to the core before the mother left, this just gave them an excuse. Physically, mentally, emotionally and sexually abused for years, Jessie creates another personality to protect her. Venn is all the things she is not. Where Jessie is a small female, Venn is a large male. Where Jessie is scared, Venn is strong and unafraid.

Jessie/Venn find themselves in an insane asylum, due to the fact that Venn murdered Jessie's brother Marcus. With a cast of characters out to hurt Jessie in any way possible Venn, even in the hospital, has his work cut out for him. From orderlies that want to sexually abuse her, to a nurse that dated Jessie's brother and wants revenge, will Venn ever get a break? Always on his feet, and always wary, Venn views everyone as an enemy. And well he should! Jessie's family is well known and well thought of in the community, since her father basically owns the town. After a series of doctors unable to reach Jessie, one finally gets through to her. A kind doctor, not on the fathers payroll, who firmly believes that Jessie has multiple personality disorder, is able to make strides in her care, and uncover secrets that Venn, and Jessie's family, want left alone.

By now you're wondering what the secret is. Also, but not limited to, will Jessie ever be safe? What happened to the people who have hurt them? Will Venn ever be able to disappear? Well, I guess you'll have to pick the book up to see! A big thank you to Roxanne for sending me the series, oh did I forget to mention that there are two more books? And a BIG cliffhanger at the end of this one? What are you waiting for, go get it. And thank you Roxanne for renewing my love of books!

I was not paid for this review. The book itself was gifted to me, and that's all there is to it :)) My opinion was in no way swayed, This review is how I truly feel. Thank you for reading, have a great day! Curl up with a good book next chance you get.-Melissa

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My thoughts:
I had my hopes up for this book, and I must admit, I was a little dissapointed. It gave quite a bit of back story about The House of Night and how it came to be, but a lot of the book was rules and things you already knew from reading the series. The Dark daughters ritual was in one of the previous books in quite a bit of detail, but for some readon, they chose to restate it in this book. I thought the vampyre twists on some stories that I learned growing up, such as Cleopatra, was pretty cool. The author could have went into greater detail about a lot of things. I was very dissapointed that Nyx and Kalona's story was not in the handbook, since it's a major part of the history of the House of Night series. The Fledgling Handbook had the potential to be so much better than it is.

I give The Fledgling Handbook: 2/5

Author Interview: Patti Larsen (by Melissa)

An author who writes, eats, sleeps and dreams Young Adult, author Patti Larsen made herself available to me for interview. Her passion is to not only share her vision and her work with as many people as she can reach, but to encourage and nurture the same fire within others. With a love of all things creative and other passions such as screenwriting, singing, inventing and now sculpture, she is definitely a woman to watch out for!!

Patti Larsen is a middle grade, young adult and adult author with a passion for the paranormal who writes a great deal of horror for someone who is afraid of the dark. She lives on the East Coast of Canada with her very patient husband Scott and four enormous cats. Read on to find out a little more about Patti and her inner workings through her answers to my questions.

*Where are you from?

I live in Prince Edward Island, the smallest province in Canada, just north of Maine. If your readers have heard of Anne of Green Gables, that’s where I’m from. But no red braids, though I do have a few freckles.

*When and why did you begin writing?

I was twelve, in a family of avid readers. I’d just finished a Nancy Drew harcover, one of the few kid’s books I read (my father was into hard core fantasy and science fiction). I realized when I set it aside that I could write a book. And just like that, I was a writer.

*When did you first consider yourself a writer?

This is a tough question. I’ve always been a writer and called myself one. But the first time after I sold my business to write full time and had someone ask me what I did, it was so surreal to tell them I was a novelist. At first I felt like a fraud, how funny is that? Now it’s just what I do.

*How personal is your writing?

Very.  I feel sometimes like I’m channeling these kids I write about (for?). When I write in first person point of view, it’s as if they take over (dear heavens, this sounds BAD doesn’t it?). And when I write third person, they are beside me, telling me what happened. I love it, love the intimacy of it. I get lost in the worlds I create and the people who inhabit them very easily.

Mind you, I’m careful not to take things personally, as in criticism, but I feel very connected to the books I write. I really think it’s a necessary part of being a writer.

*Which comes first? The character's story or the idea for the novel?

It totally depends. For Family Magic, my recent release based on the teen witch I mentioned, Syd (the lead character) came first. But when she arrived she brought the entire story with her in that one statement.

For The Hunted series, I had the image of a boy running through the woods in the dark. It honestly varies. Understanding how I think and being willing to say yes to the ideas is key. And I find the more I do it, the faster the ideas come. And with more clarity.

*What sparked the idea for your series?

I woke up in the middle of the night (this happens to me a LOT) with a voice in my head, a teen girl who told me her father was a demon and her mother was a witch but she herself just wanted to be ordinary. Ever since then, I’ve learned to listen to the voices.

*What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?

So much advice… seriously. This is a wildly changing industry right now, with so much happening both in the traditional and self publishing camps. Never have authors had the ability to control their own careers before. And yet, large publishers are still powerful and appeal to many. So I suppose my best advice is do your homework. Talk to writers. Join groups on Facebook and follow writing blogs. Learn what’s happening before you take the step and decide for yourself which path is best for you.

*If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

My dad. Just one more time. So he would know that I did it, after all these years. I know he watches me from somewhere out there, but it would have been nice to see him smile when I handed him my first paperback.

*Tell us your latest news?

I’m releasing the sequel to Family MagicWitch Hunt, on the 20th, and book three and four of that series (Demon Child and The Wild) in December. I’m excited to release this series.

Amaranth by Rachael Wade

Synopsis:
Book One of an Adult Paranormal Fantasy Romance Series

Knowledge changes everything…

Hoodoo-influenced Southern Louisiana seems like the perfect place for Camille to escape her abusive past and dysfunctional family. She doesn’t expect to fall in love with the handsome Gavin Devereaux and plummet into the world of Amaranth, a place of exile for reformed vampires.

Wrestling to escape a deadly ex-boyfriend while giving Gavin a chance, Camille is confronted with decisions that threaten not only her life, but the lives of her inhuman friends she has come to love. Entangled in her friends’ quest for freedom, she dives into their realm and faces the threats of Amaranth’s ruler—the mother of all vampires—and her own inner demons.

Now Camille must decide whether she will derail her life and make the ultimate sacrifice for the monsters that interrupted her bumpy path back to sanity—what she still wants so desperately—or escape with Gavin before it’s too late for both of them.
(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Thoughts:
This book was simply amazing. One of my favorites I have read this year. Not only was it a great vampire novel, but it also showed that women can overcome domestic violence. I loved how Camille was strong enough to back out of not only one abusive relationship, but two. Camille was without a doubt my favorite character. She was a bad ass in the way she always stood up for herself and never showed any fear, even when facing Samira, the evil ruler of Amaranth. I wish that the author would have given the reader more of a back story on Audrey and Gabe, but that might happen in the next book. The story left off on a cliffhanger. It made me very excited to learn what happens next. I can't wait for book two, The Gates to be released.

I give Amaranth: 5/5.

The Cabin by Smoky Trudeau Zeidel (Reviewed by Melissa)

A hauntingly beautiful story filled with plenty of characters, controversy and magic, The Cabin is a must read story. The Cabin follows, and connects, generations of the Hoffman family. The story line involves fairy magic, strong family ties, the Civil War and Underground Railroad.

The story starts off in 1846 with Corrine and her sister Catherine, two woman who have a deep connectedness between themselves and the Allegheny Mountains of Virginia. The connection with the girls to the mountains transcends the tangible for it is part of the mountain magic they have been raised on. While out for a walk shortly after the birth of her daughter Elizabeth, Corrine finds a fairy stone with 3 crosses on it. While washing the stone it falls and one of the crosses falls off. Not understanding why the stone feels warm Corrine heads home. Upon trying to cross the threshold Corrine is thrust into the future, thus beginning the intricate plot of the story.

At first it is a little hard to follow the back and forth between the future and present due to all of the characters, but if you stick with it the characters begin to be defined and the story once again flows like, well, magic. The reader is introduced to modern day James-Cyrus Hoffman, a descendant of Corrine and Catherine. James-Cyrus, or J.C. as he is sometime referred to, has dreamed of the cabin, with voices of children and women long passed, for as long as he can remember. Still reeling from the death of his grandfather, who has raised him since his mother died and childbirth and his father committed suicide, J.C. decides to hike the hills in search of the cabin that has plagued him for as long as he can remember. On the way up the mountain he finds a part of the fairy stone. Here is an excerpt that describes the fairy stone, an item that J.C. has been curious about since he was a small boy.

"Many, many years before Chief Powhatan and his people roamed the woods and valleys
of Virginia, the fairies made this their home." Cora stirred as she talked, her golden
eyes staring into the kettle as if they and not the fire beneath were what caused it to
stew. "The fairies led a carefree, happy life, dancing around a beautiful spring and
playing with the elves. But one day, their happy existence came to an end. An elfin
messenger came from a land far away to tell the fairies of the death of Jesus Christ.
The fairies wept with sorrow, their tears crystallizing into beautiful crosses as they fell
to earth. Not long after that, the fairies themselves disappeared."

Those tears became the fairy stones. Not long into the hike he finds the cabin. When he crosses over the threshold he is transported into the past where he meets Elizabeth, Corrine's daughter. Elizabeth's story is a large part of the story, and a huge part of which makes the story controversial.

Elizabeth's father, William, finds a wounded man who's name is Malachi, a black man with skin the color of milky tea and eyes the color of chestnuts. While he is there recovering she nurses him back to health, meanwhile falling in love with him. To make matters even more difficult Malachi is a conductor on the Underground Railroad, along with her father, and soon their home becomes station along the railroad.

There is plenty of confusion amongst the characters as to why they keep becoming connected to other times, but by more than halfway through the book the reasons become clear. Now the must fix what has gone wrong to save lives and keep the future in tact. A wonderfully spun tale, this book is a must read. As I said before, you might temporarily get confused with all of the characters but soon you'll come to know and love them. In my opinion this book definitely has a 5 star review.
I was not paid for this review. The book itself was gifted to me, and that's all there is to it :)) My opinion was in no way swayed, This review is how I truly feel. Thank you for reading, have a great evening! Curl up with a good book tonight.-Melissa

A Cowboy for Christmas by Kristen James (Reviewed by Melissa)

Kristen James has done it again with another romance novel to warm your heart. She has created truly down to earth and like-able characters with Missy and Brent. The story is perfect for the holidays! Not too long, not too short, I finished the book in about a day. Like her other book, More Than Memories, you become immersed in the story, the plot and the descriptive scenery. Here's an excerpt to give you an idea:

The picture seemed off...she leaned against the corral rail, but the ground wasn't dusty and                               the sun didn't beat down on her.
Instead, tall cedars surrounded them, with graceful limbs bowing as they leaned out.
Wispy clouds lay up in the sky like streaks of whipped cream while the sun warmed
her skin. She smelled salt in the air, mixed with forest scents. The oddity was completed
by the seagulls that called out to each other. She looked down from the birds just as
Brent led Jeffrey out of the stable entrance.

Missy arrives at the Oregon ranch after her estranged brother suddenly passes away. Not sure what she's up against, she definitely doesn't expect Brent. A long, cold drink on a hot day is this cowboy! Most people don't expect cowboys at a seaside ranch, but that's what she finds. She also finds a man who appears to hate her on sight, thinking she's going to take away his ranch. Little does he know that she has no job, no home and no money. After a bad situation forces her out of a job in Las Vegas the ranch and possibility of a roof over her head seem like something heaven sent. Missy plans on working hard to prove her worth, meanwhile avoiding the sexy stare of the gorgeous cowboy she now lives with and hiding her secrets.

Brent has secrets of his own, but that doesn't keep him from being attracted to the city slicker he's afraid will take his ranch, and possibly his heart. After Brent receives a swift kick to the ribs from a horse, Missy  feels responsible for Brent and visits daily to take care of him. It's then she decides to avoid him at any cost and he decides to seduce her.

Will their secrets tear apart the tentative relationship they build? Will the past rear it's ugly head and cause more problems for the people recovering from situations beyond their control? Can Santa deliver the gift of true love this Christmas? I guess you'll have to pick up the book to find out! A good read that will have you cheering for Missy to move on from her past and loving Brent for the way he obviously cares, you won't be disappointed.

Thank you for reading! Have a truly amazing day. Take the time to read a book and expand your imagination.
