Wake by Abria Mattina

Published September 22nd 2011
ISBN:  9780986957
Eighteen isn’t too young to run your life into the ground, but it’s not too old to fix it, either. The desire for change drives Willa Kirk from St. John’s, Newfoundland back to her hometown of Smiths Falls, Ontario, away from her mistakes and the place where her sister died. She’s looking for a place to settle and rebuild, but Jem Harper just wants to get out of town, back to the life he knew before cancer. By letting the tragedies in their lives define them, they are both dying a little more every day. Welcome to the wake.

Abria Mattina

Author of WAKE

Books as Holiday Gifts

It’s almost New Year’s Eve, and aside from the obvious things that go along with it— family obligations, parties, alcohol— there are resolutions to make. I don’t think I’ve ever successfully kept one of mine. I got lazy, or forgot, or simply set the bar too high.

Or maybe it’s that I’ve never been motivated to suddenly or radically change my life. That’s a motivation that both protagonist in Wake share, though. Wake a novel is about taking charge of your life, shaping your identity, and coming to terms with the past. At New Year’s we look to the future. What if you felt that your future had been stolen from you? Jem Harper’s plans were ruined by cancer. His senior year is a wash, not that he’ll be graduating on time now, and his dreams of being a professional musician have been shattered by the effects of chemotherapy. He hates the way he looks, resents his sense of loneliness, and prefers to look back instead of forward—back to a time before cancer.

What if you had to divorce your past to have any hope of a future? Willa Kirk did an exemplary job of screwing up her life after the death of her sister, and no amount of self- reform can change the way people perceive her. She moves away, leaving behind the evidence of her bad experiences, and tries to carve out a new life for herself. If only it were that easy.
If there’s a change you want to make this coming year, I encourage you to do it. No matter how frightening, difficult, or absurd, I believe that each of us can better our lives if we truly want to.

Happy New Year, and happy reading.

My Thoughts:
I received this ebook and I was not sure if I could get through it or not as it was quite long. The topic was also a bit depressing. That said, I am glad I stuck with it because I really enjoyed reading this book. A bittersweet story of illness, teenage angst and a great love story. I loved the strength of Jem and Willa and how they each coped in their own way with loss, Jem in the person he used to be before he got sick and Willa with the loss of her sister to cancer. Both are outcasts so to speak as they are different than the normal teen but I think that this adds to their character. Other characters include Jems parents and siblings, Willa's brother and their friends at school. The author told this story in a wonderful compassionate way. This story I think also gives the reader a sense of how devasting cancer can be, not only on the person stricken with it but on those people who are family, caregivers and the people left behind after a death. This is a story that is for the older teen as there are sexual situations but a thoroughly enjoyable book.
I received this ebook for review and was not monetarily compensated for my review.

My Photo
I was born and raised in Idaho, a place secretly known for its supernatural creatures. When I'm not in my writing lair, I'm partying with my husband and four small children. My love for storytelling began as a child when the moon first possessed the night. For when the lights went out, my imagination painted a whole new world. And what a scary world it was… Oh, and my debut YA novel Fractured Light will be out February 2012.

My Review:

This book was a gripping combination of terror, wonder, paranormal, magick, and more! It grabs you from the very beginning. This story is about what you would do to survive? What would you do to save those you love? Including the boy you have fallen in love with but can never have?  Would you fight? Would you lay down and die and let the darkness over take you?

This book sort of reminded me about another series that I just love! From Richelle Mead in those books the Moroi (a mortal vampire with an unbreakable bond to the earth's magic.) are not allowed to fight just as in this book. But things change when they begin to realize that their protectors or Guardians can not always be there.  In the end it is your own self that you must depend on to save your life.

The only thing I wish they would have done is made the bad guy badder. At times I wondered if the book was going to end before the bad guy got around to doing anything. I really can't wait for the next installment coming in 2013.  I hope we get more of what an Aura can do. As we have seen that I wouldn't want to be in a fight with one!

So go pre-order this book! You won't be disappointed.

Voiceless - Reviewed By: Crystal Trent Dotson

Neveah is now inside "her lady", and Diana is excited to be preagnant, but she knows Diego won't be happy with having to share her now. Neveah doesn't like how the "mean voice" is treating her lady, and after Diego beats on Diana and causes her to go into labor, Neveah fears for herself and her mommy. Diego promises to be better and offers to watch Neveah while Diana works, but is he a changed man and trying to be a better dad, or is it a front so he can get rid of the baby once and for all.

This is a very emotional and touching story. It brings to reality that child abuse is happening and sometimes it's right under our noses.

Death By Cake by Melanie Ray

Synopsis:
Warning! Reading story may make you actually crave sweets. Hippie hero, death by sweets, never ending childhood for young and old, and an interesting hit on the newest resident? Welcome to Lost Secret girls and boys! Shari Kari is in trouble. She just broke up with her boyfriend, but now he's got a hit on her. Her supportive sister tells her to get out of Calibri City and into a small safe town: Lost Secret. Famous for being the one-stop drop town for the rich and famous' children. No crime. Where even adults act like children. She finds a friend in Timothy Varmen, and a semi-happy life, until her special condition gets out of control. Ezekiel is the town's hero. While acting like a big child himself, he's taken on the extra duty of trying to 'save' the new local resident, whether she likes it or not. In this town, a man must learn to grow up, and a woman must learn to grow down. Scandals, inhibitions, temptations... A story of childhood...that's not for children.
(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Thoughts:
First of all, I must admit the warning is true. I ate a lot of junk food while reading this. I thought this book was absolutely wonderful. It was the most orginal novel I've read in years. The plot was wacky, but the writing was good enough to make it work. The disease Shari has, JNSQ, is obviously made up, but the author makes you almost believe it's a real disease. I liked how most of the characters were very innocent. Even when something came up, like Shari's ex not liking that she couldn't have sex, it took Zeke a while to figure out what she was talking about. The only characters I didn't care for were Shari's sister, Tracy, and Timothy. I thought they were both whiny, especially Timothy. I'm hoping in the next book, Shari breaks up with Timothy and gets together with Zeke. The book ended on a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to read book two to find out what happens.

I give Death By Cake: 4/5.
